What is networking?

The simplest definition of networking: making friends. It really is that simple! Networking carries the misconception that to network you have to have ulterior motives, or you are just out trying to see what someone else will do for you. When in truth, networking is just talking and connecting with people. You will be surprised what people are willing to do for you, without you even asking.
Never underestimate networking! It is one of, if not the most important part of finding a job. Yes, having a strong resume and good interview skill is important but having connections opens so many doors for you. Making a face to face connection is truly priceless. You never know who you can meet, or whose cousin does the hiring for your dream job. The possibilities are endless. It is hard to put into words just how beneficial this is to your success. I have obtained every job I have ever held from friends telling me about openings, or knowing someone who is part of a company. I have the privilege of working for EHD Tech, I met the CEO at a High School basketball game. What an incredible opportunity.
How do I network? What does it even look like?
The great thing about networking is you can practice and apply it in your everyday life, it just takes a little bit of confidence to put yourself out there. It includes just talking to people and being personable. There are many places you can meet and interact with people, networking events include but are not limited to work meetings, going out with friends, church, sporting events, school functions (for yourself or your kids), clubs, organizations, and many other areas.
Here are a few final tips to help you in your networking endeavors.

Smile- this makes you look more approachable and less nervous.Everyone smiles in the same language. ~Author Unknown
Firm Handshake- This is a sign of confidence. While shaking their hand look the person in the eye. Weather you are a man or women this step is extremely important. To learn how to do a proper handshake check out the link.
Look presentable- Maybe don’t go out of your way to meet people after your workout when you are in your sweats at the grocery store. Wait until you appear a little more put together.
Have a friend help you make a connection- It is a lot more comfortable and natural to have a friend take you over to introduce you to others. It flatters the person you are meeting and it gives them a connection to you. It gives you a talking point.
Have a business Card- Chances are you aren’t carrying around copies of your resume, and that is why a business card is such a useful tool. If you are working for a company currently and aren’t comfortable giving that business card maybe consider investing in a personal business card. There are places that will do them for about $10-$15. It gives someone your contact information and if you can, put your linkedin profile link on it (this is where your resume should be).
