Tip of the Month

A good work life balance will improve productivity. So, allow yourself some time outdoors. If you have a yard or a balcony, this is the time to get outside and start preparing for warmer months to come. Below are some tips to enhance your landscape and gardens, no matter the size.

  • Prune trees before new growth develops.

  • Plant new trees or shrubs.

  • Trim rose bushes.

  • Cut back ornamental grasses if not trimmed at the end of fall.

  • Divide overgrowing perennials.

  • Start seeds inside for outdoor or container gardens.

  • Prepare mowers and tools, such as sharpen blades and check spark plugs.

  • Fertilize lawn and spread grub killer in late Spring (May-June).

Every zone has different planting times and recommendation. Go to almanac.com/gardening/planting-dates to view an all season gardening calendar for your city.

Another consideration is companion growing for this year’s garden. Certain fruits, vegetables, flowers and plants when grown together enhance each other’s growth. An internet search for “companion growing guides” will give charted options. For example, did you know chives and Chrysanthemums repel Japanese beetles and Aphids? Also, beans may taste great sautéed with garlic, but, did you know they should not be planted next to each other?

Gardening and landscaping are good for your mental and physical health. Enjoy exercising your green thumbs.
