Tip of the Month

Warmer months mean time spent near water. Prepare for a water emergency to ensure you are ready to respond. Do you have an action plan and a safety toolkit (see below)? Start with a discussion of what to do first, who makes necessary phone calls or performs CPR and location of First Aid kit. You may not always be in the controlled environment of your gated home pool. Be aware of your surroundings and locate needed emergency items before entering any water.

Safety Toolkit:

First Aid kit, flotation device, portable cell phone charger or backup battery, and large pair of scissors to cut away hair from a stuck drain.

CPR Tip:

Push to the beat of the song “Staying Alive”. Go to YouTube.com to search and view various video demonstrations.

These safety tips also apply to boating. Remember blood alcohol laws are the same if you are driving a boat or a car. In the same regard, familiarize yourself with water traffic rules and local regulations. Note that some states require children under a certain age to wear life-jackets at all times, but, the general rule is every vessel must have one life-jacket, per a passenger. In addition, if on a boat, consider adding a whistle, and flares to your Safety Toolkit. Now you can go and enjoy fun in the sun knowing you are safe and prepared.
