U.S. staffing companies employed an average of 3.17 million temporary and contract workers per week in the second quarter of 2016, essentially unchanged (-0.3%) from the same period in 2015, according to data released yesterday by the American Staffing Association. Average weekly employment this April through June was flat after 25 consecutive quarters of year-to-year additions.

Temporary and contract staffing sales totaled $31.89 billion in the second quarter of 2016—1.2% higher compared with the same period in 2015.

On a quarter-to-quarter basis, staffing employment was up 2.9% from first quarter to second quarter, while temporary and contract staffing sales increased 3.0%.

“These survey results underscore what we have been hearing anecdotally,” said Richard Wahlquist, ASA president and chief executive officer. “While staffing companies continue to face talent shortages across a wide range of occupations, the current climate of uncertainty is constraining business investment and slowing economic and employment growth.”
