Land a Job During the Holidays

The consensus is that holiday job searching is the worst time to try to land a position. While in some industries this may be true, the good news is that holiday job searching is not as bad as it sounds. Some organizations use this time of year to work on budgets for the year to come. This means new positions are being discussed and candidates who are already networking among these companies will be first to be considered in January. If you are looking for a new company entirely, you may want to use this time of year to get out and network. Take a few of these steps into consideration.

  • Attend holiday gatherings. You may just get a lead, but, keep the conversation light.

  • Volunteer. Who would not want to work with or for someone that volunteers?

  • Send out Christmas cards.

  • Be prepared to be patient.

Many of your competing job seekers will sit back and wait until January to job hunt because they think many recruiters and hiring managers are taking time off. So, take advantage of the narrowing field. In fact, a substantial number of companies have jobs to fill in December and find candidates who really are serious about finding a job will keep up the search during the holidays. Holiday job seeking shows drive and ambition.
