Safety Tip: Catch Your Z's

National Safety month is nearing an end and the topic of sleep should not be over-looked. Aside from workplace risk, sleep deprivation causes economic risk for both employee and employer.

About 38 percent of United States workers sleep less than seven hours a night, according to a 2016 study from the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health. Different ages require different hours of sleep. Adults (18+ years of age) need 7-9 hours of sleep.

Besides the obvious brain fog and mood swings, lack of sleep may cause:

  • Weakened immune system.

  • Increased appetite.

  • Decreased metabolism.

  • Heart disease.

  • Diabetes.

For a better 7-9 hours of rest:

  • Include physical activity in your daily routine.

  • If possible, stick to a sleep schedule.

  • Jot down your worries or concerns and set aside for tomorrow.

  • Limit naps.

  • Limit nicotine, caffeine, alcohol, heavy food and large meals.

Nearly everyone has an occasional sleepless night. If you often have trouble sleeping or feel exhausted, contact your doctor.
